Research: The Effects of Air Pollution on Children’s Health in Kragujevac

Project goal: The general objective of the project was to examine the impact of air pollution on the health of elementary-school-age children in Kragujevac and to create a reliable basis for future activities aimed at reducing the harmful effects of air pollution on children’s health.

The specific goal of the project was to determine the connection between the level of air pollution and the frequency of visits to the doctor by children with asthma and chronic obstructive bronchitis, by comparing the heating and non-heating seasons, as well as by comparing parts of the city depending on the proximity of the “Energetika” heating plant.

Target group: children of primary school age with asthma and chronic bronchitis, with the indirect involvement of the local community, health institutions and decision makers.

The research was carried out in cooperation with the association “Arhus centar” Kragujevac. The findings show a clear link between the concentration of soot and PM10 particles and the deterioration of children’s health. We have combined the results in a study that can serve as a basis for further activities to reduce air pollution and in the decarbonization process.
